Joseph Kohn Training Center
The Joseph Kohn Training Center (JKTC), located at 130 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick, NJ, is a state-operated vocational and independent living training program run by the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI). It serves adults who are blind, deaf-blind, or visually impaired, offering a comprehensive 20-week immersive program designed to promote independence, employment readiness, and daily living skills. Core services include job training, assistive technology, Braille literacy, cane travel and orientation, personal finance, cooking, communication skills, and psychosocial support. Students can choose to live on-site in dormitory-style housing or commute daily, with remote learning offered on Fridays. The program is free for New Jersey residents who are at least 18 years old, eligible for CBVI services, and working toward competitive employment with a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Managed by Joy Atin-Shark, JKTC combines practical training with counseling and peer support to empower visually impaired adults to lead confident, self-sufficient lives.
